Excitement in the industry as LIMD signs Memphis on a new music distribution deal

We had a Q&A with talented artist Mepmhis ,who is  based in Cape Town south Africa. Memphis shared a few details about his music that am sure  his new and upcoming fans would love to know.

Q. Memphis ,sounds like the u.s city Memphis, all the same please tell us about the rapper memphis ,who is Memphis?why Memphis?

A. Memphis is not just my stage name,it’s an alternate personality. Prior to my name change I was known at first as Yung Reezy.

Yung Reezy, described in a few words was incompetent, lacked direction, and was “versatile”(a jack of all trades and a master of none). My peers had great influence on my upbringing ,from my personal life as well as my career. They helped mold me into a matured, self reliant young adult,as well as to channel my vision and discover my one true and unique sound. With the change of behaviour and pattern they gave me the nick name Memphis, seeing I had developed some growth(Memphis was a movie character I was named after as I was portraying similar traits). Secondly my spirituality had a great impact on my life , growing up in Christian descent I learnt to use prayer not only as a mode of communication to God but as well as my source of power and defence.faith did a lot for me in my personal life and it helped me realise my true purpose hence I always referred to myself as God’s child.with maturity came the alternate personality “Memphis God’s child” which is my stage name today

Q. Interesting,so where did it all start? And how long have you been in the music scene?

A.  It all started when I was pursuing my primary education,I grew up in a hip hop centralised neighborhood thus naturally I fell in love with the genre cause I could relate to the culture. At age 9 I was able to memorise lyrics from some top artists I listened to likes of Busta rhymes and 50 cent in which I became fun, thus helping me to master the art of rap.when I turned 11 with great practice and consistence I was able to structure short verses I would recite day and night, hence I started to develop a passion for music composition.with years of consecutive work I was now able to compose full songs. Finally came the year 2015 when I recorded my first song titled “none of you” which gained me exposure from my school mates and people in my neighborhood, which in turn fueled my passion to pursue music as a full time career

Q. Impressive as it sounds. Describe your sound ,who influences your kind of music ?

 A. My sound in an umbrella term can be described as gothic trap.It comprises of rap and singing on aggressive hip hop beats hence mimicking the trap sound.it is influenced by the likes of future and or Tory lanez who have been a great inspiration to me.

Q. Gothic trap? This the first time I am hearing such . So where do you see yourself  in a few years to come?

A. In a few years to come I foresee my self as the head of a global firm or independent label that will aid upcoming artists across Africa .The aim is to bring African creatives together, and collaborate to become a mouth piece for the unheard, and unearth topics that trouble our generation.

Q. Right. So what project are you working on  now ?any singles planned or videos ?

A. Currently I’m working on a project titled “delayed not denied ” which is a compilation of 10+ songs, with macguiver being the lead single. All of the tracks have been composed. The project relates to the current situation with this pandemic that has delayed my growth but certainly not denied it.

Q. Sounds like a real masterpiece. What do you think about the state of music business and the industry it self in the south African region ?

A. For a start I believe it’s balanced in terms of gender, both male and female acts have made a huge impression not only within the African continent but globally as well.i believe it has developed over the decade as well, with new infrastructure and firms that emphasizes the growth of the industry.despite the current pandemic ,I believe the industry has established a solid foundation as it is also pulling western investors ,we see the likes of Universal music group, Sony entertainment and Def Jam to name a few handpicking and investing in some of our artists. However I believe more should be done to elliviate and discover more hidden talent who lack resources to propell their careers forward, which is a huge investment on its own to the Industry. However all thanks to the digital distribution era we can safely say the industry is yet to grow and there’s no limit to its expansion all in good time.

Q. Well said. Do you have interest in working with any major artist ? If so who?

A. Actually I’d love to work with a lot of established artists  both within our continent and globally. I believe in collaboration as it allows artistic creatives to fuse their different styles to formulate a beautiful piece of work. I also believe in collaboration as it is a learning experience and allows artists to learn from each other , hence grow and improve their sound.locally within our continent I would love to work with nasty c and globally I envy a collaboration with future

Q. Well picked. Are you signed to any record label? and would you want to be signed to one ?

A. I am currently independent and not signed to any label as of yet. For progress sake yes , however in future I’d wish to resume independence after I  catch my feet so as to fulfill my above mentioned dream.

Q. where can fans follow you ? Any social media handles?
